How to Prevent Wrinkled Clothes

There’s nothing worse than getting ready for work in the morning and realizing that your shirt is wrinkled. You might not always have the time to stop and iron your clothes with your busy schedule. That is why it is important to know how you can prevent wrinkles in your clothes without taking time out of your schedule to iron them.

Separate Your Clothes

While many people already separate their clothes based on color, it is also important to separate by weight and fabric content. For example, if you were to wash a light weight item such as a t-shirt with a heavy weight item such as jeans, your t-shirt could be crushed by the weight of the jeans causing wrinkles. Also, when drying it is important to know that light weight items require less time in the dryer. If you over dry light weight items wrinkles can become deeply set.

Pay Careful Attention to Your Drying Cycles

When drying clothes, it is important to know the differences in the heating and cool down cycles. For example synthetic fabrics don’t need higher heat, so they work best with the permanent press cycle. This cycle has a cool down period, which allows items to relax to their normal shape. It is important to not let your clothes overheat, so the cool down period can be very helpful in preventing wrinkles.

Know How to Properly Unload Your Dryer

If you want to save time by avoiding ironing, it is key that you know how to correctly unload your dryer. As soon as your take a piece of clothing out of the dryer, give it a snap to remove smaller items that might be stuck to it. For items that need to be hung, make sure you straighten them out while placing them on the hanger to avoid wrinkles. When taking clothes out of the dryer, it is important not to throw them in a basket and let them sit, you should fold them soon after they come out of the dryer to avoid wrinkles.

Don’t Jam Your Clothes Tightly into a Drawer or Closet

You could do everything right when it comes to preventing wrinkles, but if you carelessly cram your clothes into a drawer after folding your clothes could become wrinkles. Also, don’t put your clothes in a drawer or closet while they are still warm from the dryer. They will need time to air out to prevent wrinkles from occurring.

The Importance of Washing your Bed Sheets

After a long day of work, all you want to do is climb into your bed. However, sometimes it’s not easy to get comfortable. A reason for that could be that your sheets are dirty. If you are not regularly washing your sheets, they will continue to collect bacteria and other substances. Not only does that not sound like a surface that you want to lay in for eight hours a night, but it also leaves you at risk for potential infection. Here are a few things that can happen if you are not regularly washing your sheets.

Bacteria Accumulation

When you are sleeping, dead skin cells and perspiration are being soaked into your sheets. This creates bacteria that rapidly multiplies because they are so small. This can be a problem when you are sleeping, especially if you have an open cut. The bacteria can enter the body through the wound and cause an infection.

Spreading Infection

If you have been sick, it is extremely important to wash your sheets. The bacteria from when you were sick has soaked into the sheets and has the potential to spread if you do not wash.

Dust Mites

Dust mites feed off of dead skin cells from the body, which can be on your sheets if you do not wash them regularly. Dust mites can lead to asthma attacks or other symptoms such as: sneezing, coughing, and skin rashes.
Washing your sheets is an important factor in making sure you stay healthy. These factors are often overlooked and can lead to sickness or infection. That is why you should make washing your sheets a part of your laundry routine.

Stop by Bakers Centre Laundry and don’t put off washing your sheets any longer. We are available to you and your needs with our 24-hour laundry service.

How to Prevent Your Colors from Fading

Everyone loves the way fresh, brand-new clothing looks: bright, vibrant, solid colors that pop! However, we all know how easy it is for those colors to fade over time after washing. So to prevent your colors from fading, check out these helpful tips!

  1. Read the Care Label

This may seem like a straight-forward or obvious suggestion, but many of us tend to ignore the care labels on our clothing. That being said, taking a few seconds to identify how our clothes should be properly washed is essential for the lifespan of the garments.

  1. Wash Dark Colors Together

Not only is sorting your clothes a great opportunity to check the care label, but it also eliminates the dreaded possibility of staining all of your white socks red when you accidently throw that new red t-shirt into the wash.

  1. Turn Clothes Inside Out

By turning your clothes inside out while washing and drying, you can reduce the amount of general wear and tear. The washing and drying process is rough on the exterior of your clothes, so you can minimalized the damage by turning them inside out for the cleaning process.

  1. Don’t Stuff the Washer

By stuffing a washer, you may think you’re saving time and resources, but you are in fact making the machine work harder to wash the clothing. Additionally, detergent cannot distribute evenly or be properly rinsed when there are too many clothes in the washer. Similarly, clothes take a lot longer to dry when a large amount is stuffed into a dryer.

  1. Wash in Cold Water

Detergents in the last few years have evolved so that they perform just as well in cold water as they do in hot water. Cold water also reduced color bleeding, while also saving on energy.

  1. Don’t Over-Dry

It’s tempting to set the dryer for a long period of time and let it go, ensuring our clothes are bone dry. However, overheating is detrimental to bright and dark colors as it promotes fading. In fact, clothes should be slightly damp when removing from the dryer, and allowed to completely dry by air.

  1. Add Vinegar

Adding a cup of vinegar to your washing machine acts as a natural fabric softener and also helps prevent color fading.

  1. Use the Gentle Cycle or a Gentle Detergent

Using your machine’s gentle cycle, or by hand washing these delicate items, you can ensure that your colors will last as long as possible. There are also detergents that are specifically formulated to prevent fading and color loss in bright and dark colored clothing.

Ways to Keep Your White Shirt Sparkling White

It can be tough keeping a brand new white shirt’s vibrancy and stainlessness after a couple of weeks of wear. However, these tips may help you have more success in making sure your white clothes stay that way.

  1. Make sure your white fabrics and darker fabrics are separated before going into the wash. If these are placed into a washer together, it could very likely result in color transfer or bleeding dye, coloring your white fabric, or simply causing it to look unclean.
  2. Wash your white clothes in hot water, and make sure to use plenty of soap or detergent to wash away all the dirt. You may also want to add a whitener into the wash, such as lemon juice, vinegar, or hydrogen peroxide.
  3. When it comes to fabric that has been yellowed with time, rinse in a little vinegar and water, and hang it someplace bright and warm to dry.
  4. Pre-treat the stains on your clothes with normal soap or laundry detergent. Scrub the stain away thoroughly, before soaking in hot water.
  5. Make sure that the clothes have been completely rinsed, in a clean washing machine, so that dirt in the machine is not being transferred onto the fabric. If nothing else works, add some bleach to your load, in an appropriate amount.

The Benefits to Folding Laundry

Some people may enjoy folding their laundry, finding it a good way to pass the time on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It may appeal to their organized nature, or act as a soothing repetitive motion. Others are not so fond of the activity. To these people, folding the laundry is a dull chore, one that is better off being replaced by just stuffing one’s clothes in an empty drawer. However, there are certain advantages that come with folding your laundry properly, and may just make the task worth it.

  1. For example, folding your articles of clothing allows for you to have much more room to store them. Whether you are putting laundry away in a drawer, or packing up for a trip, you will be provided much more volume by reducing the amount of space each individual article takes up. This way, it is easy to store everything in one contained area, rather than having to find a new spot to put away the clothes that wouldn’t fit with the rest.
  2. Folding greatly reduces the amount of wrinkles and creases in your laundry. When you go out in a new shirt or pair of pants, you want to look your best. Wrinkled-up clothing makes the wearer look disheveled and harder to take seriously. Wearing smooth, properly folded attire both looks good and feels right.
  3. Organization is key for a peaceful daily routine, and folding your clothes is a key part of organizing. Folded clothes in a stack are easy to access, and to group together with articles of a similar nature. This process will make your life much easier than attempting to locate a certain piece of clothing in an unmanageable pile.

clothing directly into your hamper! Hang them up to dry first. This prevents giving your other clothing in your hamper odor and allow the sweat to completely dry rather than lasting until your next laundry day!

  3. There are specialty laundry products made for fitness clothing! These will usually be labelled “Odor Defense.”
  4. Using cold water on your bright and color workout attire will prevent the color from fading too quickly.
  5. Skipping the dryer will benefit the elasticity and color of your clothing because you are avoiding the heat. Also, do not hang your colorful clothing in direct sunlight!
  6. Online, you can purchase detergent made specifically for active wear usually found when searching “Sports Detergent.” washing your clothing in this should have an instant-fresh effect.

How to Properly Clean Your Comforter

With the winter weather well underway, we all have had a chance this season to curl up under the covers and keep cozy. This time of the year is the time for cuddles and snuggles, and it is important to make sure that your comforter is fresh and clean. We here at Bakers Centre Laundry have a few tips on how to stay warm and tidy this winter!

  1. Determine when your comforter needs cleaning: Your comforter should be washed every 1-3 months, on the regular. You may need to wash it sooner after any illnesses in order to eliminate bacteria and keep it from spreading. If you have any allergies, it is also important to wash your comforter on a regular basis.
  2. Check for any loose thread or tears: You want to check your comforter for any loose  threads that need trimming so that they will not get caught during the washer’s spin cycle. You also want to be sure there are no holes in the comforter before washing. In the case of any small tears, it is a good idea to mend them before washing to prevent them from getting any bigger or the filling from spilling out.
  3. Read the label: Many people make the mistake of washing their comforters without carefully following the instructions on the care label. The care label is meant for you to get the most use out of the product. Most comforters can be washed at home but some may be need to be dry cleaned, so be sure to read carefully.
  4. Treat any stains: You want to treat any stains on your comforter with a store bought treatment or a homemade solution of equal parts baking soda and white vinegar. Let the solution sit on the stain for 15 minutes before washing. This will help optimize maximum freshness and cleanliness of your comforter.
  5. Washing your comforter: when you load your comforter into the washing machine, you want to be sure that it is evenly distributed and that there is enough room for your comforter to get thoroughly cleaned. If you think your washing machine at home is too small, don’t hesitate to bring it in to Bakers Centre Laundry and use one of our front-loading washing machines. Be sure to follow specific temperature and washing machine settings.
  6. Drying your comforter: When loading your comforter into the dryer, you again want to be sure that your comforter is evenly distributed and has enough room to dry. Place a pair of tennis balls into the dryer along with it to ensure fluffiness and freshness. You could also hang your comforter outside to dry in the event of warm and sunny weather. Make sure your comforter is completely dry before proceeding to use it. This could take up to a few hours.

If your comforter is not as fresh and fluffy as you like, let us clean it! Bring it to us using our 24-hour drop off service. If you’re having trouble or have any questions or concerns, please give us a call at (215) 227-1454 or contact us online.
