washing winter clothes

It’s beginning to look a lot like winter! We’re staying warm all season long thanks to our cushiony cotton socks and wonderful woolen sweaters. The cleaning buffs at Bakers Centre Laundry created a list of tips to take care of your winter clothing so they can take care of you all season long:

Cashmere Care

Cashmere sweaters and winter weather are quite the dynamic duo! As far as laundering goes, your cashmere garments need some special attention to avoid ruining its material. Follow these instructions for the optimal cashmere care:

  • Hand wash in cold water with baby shampoo or Woolite®
  • Lay flat and press with towel to dry
  • Fold into thirds to prevent creases
  • Clean before stowing away for better preservation

As far as your cashmere items go, you’ll only need to wash them two times during the season. Bring them down to our self-serve laundromat for a guarantee clean!

Wooly Wear

Wool clothing is the ideal wintertime material because it keeps in body heat and prevents external temperatures from permeating through. For efficient wool cleaning, you should:

  • Remove stains by blotting cold water or club soda with a cloth
  • Hand wash in warm water with mild detergent
  • Soak for 5 minutes then rinse with cold water
  • Squeeze dry and lay flat

Let your wool attire dry for at least 24 hours to ensure that any wrinkles are gone and for the fabric to return back to its normal feel and shape.

Down Feather Delights

Down feather clothing is every winter wardrobe essential. However, laundering these items can be quite a hassle and usually require extra care. To manage your down feather items:

  • Use the “permanent press cycle”
  • Stop wash midway through to soak for an hour before continuing (if really dirty)
  • Dry on low heat, adding tennis balls in the dryer to declump
  • Repeat drying cycle if still damp

It’s recommended to use a “front-loading” washing machine compared to a “top-loading” due to the risk of fabric damage. Let our  24 hour laundromat be your down feather solution!

Very, Very Velvet

While velvet is a fun and comfy material that will keep you warm all winter long, you should proceed with caution when laundering. Tips on maintaining your velvets include:

  • Refrain from using an iron
  • Steam inside out to remove wrinkles
  • Hang up in a steamy bathroom as a wrinkle remover alternative
  • Freshen up material with a lint roller

Most velvet items do require dry cleaning services for proper treatment and should be brought down to a laundromat. Be sure to read the clothing tags for a better idea!
